What are the Corporation Tax deadlines for a property company?
Last checked against the sources on
The Company Tax Return is due 12 months after the end of the accounting period it covers. The Corporation Tax itself is usually due 9 months and one day after the end of that period, so the payment falls due before the return does.
Two different dates
- Filing the return: 12 months after the end of the accounting period.
- Paying the tax: usually 9 months and one day after the end of the accounting period.
The common mistake is to treat the return deadline as the payment deadline. The tax has to be worked out, and paid, about three months before the return is due. For a company with a 31 March year-end, the payment falls on 1 January and the return is due the following 31 March.
Penalties
GOV.UK says a company has to pay a penalty for late filing of the return, and sets the amounts out on a separate page.
How SPV Accounts helps
SPV Accounts works out the tax from the same figures as the accounts, so the amount to pay is known as soon as the year is complete, well ahead of the payment date.
