Does a property company have to file a Company Tax Return if it made a loss?
Last checked against the sources on
Yes. GOV.UK says you must still send a Company Tax Return if you make a loss or have no Corporation Tax to pay. A company must file the return if it receives a notice to deliver one from HMRC, and the return is due 12 months after the end of the accounting period.
What GOV.UK says
- A company must file a Company Tax Return if it gets a “notice to deliver a Company Tax Return”.
- You must still send a return if you make a loss or have no Corporation Tax to pay.
- You work out your profit or loss for Corporation Tax. It can differ from the profit or loss in your annual accounts.
- You should file the return online. The return is due 12 months after the end of the accounting period it covers.
Why the figures can differ
The accounts follow accounting rules and the tax return follows tax rules, so some items are treated differently in each. That is why the accounts and the tax computation are two separate pieces of work, even when they start from the same bank statements.
How SPV Accounts helps
SPV Accounts prepares the tax return from the same confirmed figures as the accounts, including a year with a loss, and shows how the tax profit was reached.
