Do companies have to file their accounts using software from 2028?

Last checked against the sources on

Yes. GOV.UK says that from 1 April 2028 all companies must file their accounts using commercial software, in iXBRL format. Companies House’s web and paper services close for accounts filings on that date, whether the directors file or a professional does it for them.

What changes

Other changes announced with it

A GOV.UK announcement of 9 June 2026 says micro-entities and small companies must file a profit and loss account with Companies House as other companies do, with an option to opt out of publishing it on the public register, and that the details of the opt-out will be confirmed. It also lists removing the option to file abridged accounts, a strengthened eligibility statement for companies claiming an audit exemption, and reducing how often a company can shorten its accounting reference period.

The date has moved before

GOV.UK’s guidance records that in January 2026 it said the changes would not be introduced in April 2027, and in June 2026 it gave 1 April 2028 as the date. Its announcement says companies would have one full accounting year plus 9 months to get ready. Check the guidance for the current position before you rely on a date.

GOV.UK also warns that not all software supports the iXBRL tagging needed to file digital accounts, so check that your provider does.

How SPV Accounts helps

SPV Accounts prepares a property company’s accounts in iXBRL format from the confirmed bank lines, so the accounts are in the format Companies House will require.
